You’re my lobster.

How many LGBTQ characters and stories reside on your children’s bookshelves? If you’re like us, maybe a handful, probably less. So in honor of Pride, I wanted to share the progressive fairy tale that I am head over heels in love with.

Once upon a time, there was a prince who was poised to inherit the throne, and he needed a partner to help him rule the kingdom. He travels far and wide to meet dozens of aspiring princesses, but he doesn’t feel any chemistry. While the royal family is away matchmaking, a dragon attacks the realm. The prince rushes back to defend his land, and in the course of battle meets a knight in shining armor.

“The knight took off his helmet to reveal his handsome face,
and as they gazed into each other’s eyes, their hearts began to race.”

It’s love at first sight. This is the part where I had an “I’m not crying, you’re crying!” moment with my two year old. At the couple’s debut and subsequent wedding, the king, queen, and villagers are unequivocally joyful. The community’s wholehearted support and pure happiness beautifully delivers the message that Love Is Love, and it always deserves to be celebrated.
