Ocean Meets Sky
Written & Illustrated by The Fan Brothers
Age Level: 4-7 Years

A rare gem.

The illustrations throughout this book are jaw-dropping. The story is thoughtful and meaningful, about a young boy who builds a makeshift boat in honor of his late grandfather and journeys to find a special place they use to talk about where ocean meets sky. But the pictures are the real star. Text is sparse and simple, which allows the exquisite artwork to perform the majority of the storytelling. Rendered with exquisite detail in a soothing palette of greens and blues, each scene is captivating, transportive, and magical.

“His boat began to lift from the water … or had the water fallen away?”

This book feels special. It’s the kind you’ll save for the next generation, which is appropriate since the story is rooted in the special bond a child has with their grandparent. Pages invite close inspection and long lingering pauses that prolong turning the page. It’s evident early on in the story that the reader is inside the child’s dream, but it’s such a whimsical and extravagant place that you won’t be in a rush for him to wake up.
