Every Night Is Pizza Night

The title is basically my quarantine diet.

My son, who is a very picky eater, totally relates to Pipo, the heroine of this incredibly fun and mouthwatering book authored by James Beard award-winner J. Kenji López-Alt. Pipo eats pizza on repeat. She is convinced that it is *the best.* But her mother challenges her assertion, “How do you know pizza is best if you never try anything else?” (Does that sound familiar to anyone besides me?!?)

Pipo’s science teacher says a good scientist always wants more data, so she scours her awesomely diverse neighborhood trying a range of new foods.

“I do not need it.
I do not
want it.
But I will
try it.”

She falls in love with bibimbap from Korea, tagine from North Africa, and a soulful Creole meal of red beans and rice. The more food she tries, the more Pipo realizes that there are many foods that are *the best,* often depending on what you’re in the mood for or what you associate with a particular dish. Pizza is still her favorite, but she’s now ready and eager to sample the larger culinary pie.

My son absolutely loves this book and I hope it will eventually convince him to broaden his palate. But when I finish reading and ask him what he wants for dinner, he always answers “Pizza!”
