Meet Danbi, your new BFF.

It's Danbi's first day of school in America. She doesn't speak a word of English. But this isn't a story about a child who is shy and overwhelmed by a new situation. It's about owning who you are and giving it your best shot.

Danbi's confidence in herself and pride in her Korean culture is contagious. She proudly writes her name in Korean on the board, telling readers it means "sweet rain." She enthusiastically tries out brand new dances and games. By lunchtime, she wins everyone over with her mouthwatering—and gorgeously illustrated—lunch:

"Yams in honey, crystal dumplings, sweet-and-sour mini skewers, rainbow drops, and half-moon rice cakes dipped in sweet sesame! All my favorites!"

I practically had to catch the drool from hitting the page when my kids read that. We cheered for Danbi as she shared her food, demonstrated how to use chopsticks, and used utensils to create a band and start a parade.

In the end, Danbi forms a special friendship with one of her classmates, but she also befriends every child—and parent—who has the pleasure of reading her utterly charming, beautifully drawn story.
