“Somebody has been tasting my porridge!”

Every child needs an anthology of classic fairy tales in their library and this one is hands-down the best. Our house didn’t have one until I realized that so many modern children’s books borrow characters and storylines from the classics, and without the fundamental reference point of the original stories, much of the creativity and fun was lost on my mini readers. So I went hunting for a book of fairy tales, and ended up being completely blown away by my discovery.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that this book has museum-quality illustrations. It took illustrator Scott Gustafson over four years to complete the 75 oil paintings that grace the pages and bring the stories to life.

“But if you would love me, and have me for your companion and playmate, and let me sit by you at the table, and eat from your plate, and drink from your cup, and sleep in your little bed — if you would promise me all this, then I would gladly dive below the water and return your golden ball to you.” - excerpt from The Frog Prince

Each story, which was chosen and edited by Gustafson, has a nostalgic, old-world touch that contributes to the book’s timeless feel. The selected versions don’t gloss over the parts that are a little scary or shocking. After all, that’s part of what makes them so memorable and irresistible. Delivering a balance of princess tales and adventure stories, the compilation includes favorites such as Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
