Art History 101

One of the things I miss the most about pre-pandemic life is going to the art museum. In lieu of in-person visits, we’ve frequently been pulling this favorite alphabet book of ours off the shelf, which is coming apart at the spine from so many readings.

Featuring artwork by Degas, van Gogh, Monet, and Picasso, this book is a stunning introduction to the art world in addition to being a fabulous alphabet primer. I love that this is an interactive book with engaging questions on every page, such as “Can you pose like this dancer?” “What else is white in the painting?” or “What other shapes do you see?” The prompts really encourage us to slow down and linger over each page, and we often discover something we’d never noticed before.

This book is produced by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and each work is from its spectacular collection. I’ll leave you with a beautiful and insightful quotation, which comes from the page “A Welcome from the Director” at the beginning of the book:

“The worlds of art and literature are filled with magic and wonder, inviting us to travel imaginatively to different times and places and to experience things that would otherwise remain beyond our reach.”
